It started in a tax office queue.
In the early 2000s, a boy walked to the state tax office every month to collect his mother’s ICMS payment slips. She worked twelve hours a day and ended each month with one more slip to pay.
He still remembers her face as she took each slip: a mix of despair and anger.
That boy is Matheus Mattes. That scene is what pushed him into tax law, and it is where Ocean Tax comes from.

Who signs off on the technical work?
The work is carried out by the team responsible for each front. Owners, signatures and technical deliverables are defined according to the nature of the case and the contracted scope. Whoever signs holds a professional license, and the grounds of every position go in writing.
How long has Ocean Tax been around?
The consultancy was registered in May 2022, and the work it does comes from 10+ years of the founder in Brazilian tax law. A good share of the cases arrives through referrals from law and accounting firms that work alongside the team.
Where is the office? Do you serve clients outside Rio Grande do Sul?
The head office is at Rua Tamandaré, 140, salas 1301, 1503 e 1504, Pátria Nova, Novo Hamburgo/RS. The team works remotely and serves companies across Brazil. Much as we love hosting and visiting clients in person, tax paperwork is digital and the analysis does not depend on a visit.
Are you a law firm?
No. Ocean Tax is a tax and accounting consultancy, and it has a team of lawyers and accountants to hold up what is technical in each case: the legal basis of a credit, the defence inside a tax enforcement proceeding, the corporate design of a succession.
