Wealth and Succession Planning

Protect the family's assets and prepare the company to carry on without you. Ocean Tax settles who owns what, who decides and how the wealth passes to the next generation.

Who this work is for Wealth and Succession Planning

The work pays off when the company recognizes itself in at least one of these profiles.

  • Business owners holding assets in their own name, or about to acquire themJust before acquiring is the cheapest moment to decide on the structure.
  • Families whose succession is still a verbal agreementMore than one generation involved in the business, and no rule on record.
  • Heirs who received stakes without knowing the risksAnyone who received an ownership stake without understanding what risk comes attached to it.
  • Partners whose personal assets are exposed to company debtA partnership with no shareholders' agreement, and personal guarantees given on behalf of the company.
  • Companies expanding, bringing in investors, passing to the next generation or sellingEvery process that brings in a third party starts by looking at the structure that already exists.

What it is Wealth and Succession Planning

Ownership, decisions and succession settled before there is a dispute.

The work starts with the assets and companies you already have. Our team identifies whose name each asset is in, what risks exist and what the family wants to preserve.

From there, we design the structure and the rules for management and succession, with the cost of setting it up and keeping it running.

What this solves Wealth and Succession Planning

Without written rules, one dispute can threaten what took decades to build.

Who decides, who receives and who takes over the company needs to be agreed before the conflict, not during it. Ocean Tax puts those decisions on paper and addresses the family's exposure to the risks of the business.

Common questions

Do I need to set up a holding company?

Not necessarily. First we compare the assets, the family's goals and the costs of each alternative. A holding company comes in when it makes sense in that math.

Will I lose control of the company?

The planning includes ways to preserve control for whoever built the business. We define the management and voting rules together with the succession, within the limits of the law.

Does this work also reduce taxes?

Reducing the taxes on succession and on the sale of assets is part of the work. You receive a comparison of the alternatives, including the cost of creating and maintaining the structure.

Does the planning wipe out debts and prevent every dispute?

No. It organizes ownership, separates risks and sets rules. Existing obligations still need to be dealt with on their own terms.

Is this only for people with a lot of wealth?

What justifies the work is complexity: companies, partners, heirs and assets with different risks. In the first analysis, we assess whether the benefit justifies the cost of the structure.
